Both New Zealand Cricket and Cricket Wellington made a joint decision to grant Devine a much-needed break due to her extensive workload over the past year.
During the first part of the campaign, Devine won’t be available for the Blaze as she takes time off to rest and rejuvenate. Her participation in the latter part of the tournament will be decided later.
Liz Green, NZC’s head of women’s high performance, highlighted that prioritizing the players’ mental and physical well-being is crucial. Devine’s need for a break was evident, especially considering the significant year ahead for the White Ferns.
“2024 holds substantial events for the White Ferns, including England’s series later in the summer and the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup. Sophie’s break is essential for her to recharge and prepare adequately for the challenges ahead,” Green emphasized.
In Devine’s absence, Amelia Kerr, another White Fern, will step in as the captain of the Wellington Blaze. The team is set to kick off their Super Smash campaign at the Basin Reserve on Thursday, facing the Otago Sparks.
