PCB Workshop Scheduled for PSL Expansion, Including Zoom Participation for Unavailable Franchise Representatives

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has announced that a workshop for the Pakistan Super League (PSL) will be held on Friday, June 23, in Lahore. Due to the unavailability of some franchise representatives who are not in the country, they will participate in the workshop through Zoom calls.

During this workshop, the PCB is expected to provide further details regarding the addition of two more teams to the PSL competition. Franchise owners have been informed that a formula will be devised to ensure there are no financial losses for any party involved.

As per the initial proposal, 95% of the central pool revenue will continue to be allocated to the existing six teams for another year. According to the agreement, teams can be expanded from the 11th year onwards, allowing the new franchises to also earn maximum profits. Additionally, PSL franchises will be given the opportunity to purchase proposed women’s league teams. Alternatively, interested parties will be approached to acquire the women’s teams for a designated fee.

Franchise owners have expressed interest in securing perpetuity rights similar to the Indian Premier League (IPL), which concluded after ten years in India. However, PSL teams, which were sold at lower prices initially, are not in favor of such a model and prefer a central pool system that would benefit them more.

Another option being considered is extending the ownership tenure to 50 years. As per the current contract, there will be a 25% increase in the franchise fee in the 11th year.

However, it is important to note that with the withdrawal of Najam Sethi’s candidacy for the PCB chairmanship, there may be potential changes to the plans discussed above.
