Veteran spinner and India’s leading Test wicket-taker among active cricketers, Ravichandran Ashwin, is poised to make his ODI comeback after a hiatus that stretches back to January 2022. The off-spinner has received an unexpected call-up for the forthcoming three-match ODI series against Australia, commencing this Friday. This series holds significant importance as it serves as the final rehearsal for the Indian cricket team before the eagerly anticipated 2023 Cricket World Cup, scheduled to kick off on October 5. While Ashwin is not part of the World Cup squad, his inclusion has sparked speculation.

Clarification from BCCI Chief Selector

Ajit Agarkar, the chief selector of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), unveiled the squad for the Australia series on Monday and shed light on Ashwin’s selection. Agarkar explained that Ashwin’s inclusion resulted from an injury sustained by the left-arm spinner Axar Patel, who is a member of the ODI World Cup squad. Axar had to sit out the Asia Cup final due to a quadriceps injury.

When questioned whether Ravichandran Ashwin would serve as a replacement for Axar Patel if the latter remains unfit for the World Cup, Ajit Agarkar responded: “There are a couple of guys anyway, both him (Ashwin) and Washington (Sundar).

“What we know with Axar’s (Patel) injury is that he should be okay. We will have a clearer picture once we know that. But, at least it leaves us with options. If these guys get a couple of games now, (it) gives the team management a few options if they need to go that way.

“If the need arises, we will probably have a look at it at that stage. But I don’t think there is a need to speculate right now or make any decisions because we are hoping that Axar is fit.”

Notably, the selectors have opted to rest the in-form Kuldeep Yadav for the first two ODIs.

When asked if this decision was made to keep an element of surprise for the World Cup, Captain Rohit Sharma explained, “Kuldeep is a wrist spinner and needs rhythm, but we also considered that his bowling form is excellent. As Ajit (chief selector) mentioned, we needed to give some players a chance since they played only one match in the Asia Cup and are part of the WC squad. We needed to assess them as well.

“Kuldeep has been in our radar for the last 18 months, and we didn’t want to overexpose him. He will feature in the final match, and the best way to gauge him is in the third match. We have two practice games, and he will regain his bowling rhythm,” added the skipper.

Hooda returned to the dressing room for the team’s 256 runs, but played an innings of 64 off just 35 balls to win the team and left the field.

Axar’s innings had 5 sixes and 3 fours. Sanju Samson (63) and Shreyas Iyer (54) played a role in the run chase with half-centuries. With this 2-wicket win, India took the three-match series with one match in hand.

Earlier, after winning the toss and electing to bat, the Windies scored 311 runs for the loss of 6 wickets. Opener Shai Hope played an innings of 115 runs in his 100th ODI. 74 runs came from the bat of captain Nicholas Pooran. Kyle Meyers also scored 39 off 23 balls. For India, Shardul Thakur took three wickets for 54 runs.

An unbeaten 64 with the bat as well as taking one wicket with the ball. The award for the best match went to him.

Indian left-arm spinner Axar Patel, who claimed his fifth five-wicket haul in his fourth Test on Saturday, said that he has never seen himself as white-ball specialist. Axar claimed 5 for 62 on Day 3 of the Kanpur Test against New Zealand to bring India right back into the contest.

Chasing India’s first innings total of 345, New Zealand began the day on 129 for no loss but, thanks to Axar’s brilliance, were bowled out for 299. India gained a lead of 49 runs, which they extended to 63 by scoring 14 for 1 by stumps.

Speaking at the end of the day’s play, Axar was asked about his transformation to playing Test matches from being a white-ball player. The 27-year-old countered that he has never considered himself as a white-ball specialist. He said, “Whenever I have played first-class or India A, I have done well. I have never seen myself as a white ball specialist.�?/p>

He claimed that the perception of being a white-ball cricketer or red-ball cricketer was all in the mind. He added, “It’s all in mind-set as to what you perceive yourself as – a white ball specialist or red ball specialist. I always had the belief that whenever I get a chance I will do well. Obviously, I give credit to team members for having faith in me and I have been able to stand up to their expectations.”

With Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja around, Axar is not guaranteed of a place in the Test playing XI. However, the left-arm spinner doesn’t see that as a hindrance. Looking at the positive side, he stated, “Whenever I go to the ground, I try and enjoy and not think about whether Ashwin bhai and Jaddu are there. When I have ball in my hand, I just try and see to it that I am enjoying my bowling, trying to read the wicket and understand what’s happening, how it’s behaving and plan accordingly.�?/p>

New Zealand were 197 for 1 at one stage in their first innings when their skipper Kane Williamson was trapped lbw by Umesh Yadav for 18. The visitors ended up losing nine wickets for 99 runs. Apart from Axar, Ashwin also made an impact, claiming three scalps.
