In October 2019, The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) was headed by Sourav Ganguly and Jay Shah. A proposal was moved at the board’s first AGM. The BCCI and the state cricket associations did not have the opportunity to serve for two consecutive terms. After three years in one term, the organizers had the opportunity to return to the administration of the board or state cricket through a break in the next term and re-election. There was a consensus in the AGM to amend this provision. In December of that year, the BCCI approached the court.

Nearly three years later, the Supreme Court gave its verdict. There is no bar to amending the BCCI constitution. As a result, anyone can be in charge of BCCI or state cricket for two consecutive terms.

The supreme court’s decision came at a time when Ganguly-Jay Shah’s tenure was nearing its end. The term of the current BCCI committee will be completed by the end of this month. However, there is a strong buzz in the Indian media that Prince of Calcutta Sourav Ganguly may not be seen as the president for the second term.

There are several reasons behind this. The BJP is in a politically strong position in India. Jay Shah is the son of Union Home Minister Amit Shah. According to the Indian Express, at least 15 state associations will vote for Jay Shah if the president is elected. The BJP is in power in 13 of these 15 states. So if the president is elected, Ganguly will not be able to get along with Jay Shah.

Apart from this, Jay Shah will have to wait for another six years if he cannot become the BCCI president this time. It is also not certain what the political situation is like at that time. So Jay Shah may be the next president of the BCCI. In that case, Arun Dhumal, who is in charge of the current treasurer, can be the new secretary.
