Colombo, Sri Lanka – Babar Azam, the captain and star batsman of Pakistan, expressed his team’s determination to assemble a formidable side in the upcoming Lanka Premier League (LPL) auction. The Colombo Strikers have already secured the services of Babar Azam, talented fast bowler Naseem Shah from Pakistan, and Sri Lankan T20 stars Matheesha Pathirana and Chamika Karunaratne for the LPL 2023, as confirmed by a press release from the Colombo Strikers.

“The auction holds immense significance in any franchise cricket tournament. We have identified the type of players we require and our focus will be on creating the strongest team in the tournament,” said Azam, as mentioned in the press release.

Head coach Simon Helmot outlined the team’s strategy, emphasizing the importance of acquiring explosive batsmen and wicket-taking bowlers to execute an aggressive brand of cricket. The bowling coach, Chaminda Vaas, spoke about the team’s intention to construct a well-balanced bowling unit, prioritizing the inclusion of talented local players.

Assistant coach Jerome Jayaratne acknowledged the challenges of the auction process and emphasized the need for a composed approach while staying within budget constraints. While the team will aim to secure marquee players, they also have a keen interest in nurturing young local talents.

Sagar Khanna, the owner of the Colombo Strikers, stressed the importance of making astute choices in the auction to ensure a strong start for the team. The franchise boasts a skilled group of coaches and analysts who are diligently preparing for the event.

In March, Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) announced that the fourth edition of the Lanka Premier League (LPL) is scheduled to take place from July 31 to August 22, 2023. This premier T20 domestic competition in Sri Lanka attracts international players alongside local talents. Each team participating in the tournament will consist of 20 players, including 14 Sri Lankans and six overseas players. The Jaffna Kings, having secured their second consecutive title, emerged as the champions in the 2022 edition, following their victories in all three editions of the league, including the 2020 edition as the Jaffna Stallions.
