These exceptional players are now in contention for the prestigious ICC Men’s Player of the Month Award for August 2023.

Nicholas Pooran’s brilliant knock of 67 overshadowed Tilak Varma’s maiden international half-century as the West Indies secured a thrilling two-wicket victory against India in the second Twenty20 International in Guyana on Sunday.

India struggled to 152/7 after opting to bat first, and despite Pooran’s heroics, the West Indies found themselves in a precarious situation at 129/8 after losing four wickets for just three runs.

However, tailenders Alzarri Joseph and Akeal Hosein kept their composure and guided the West Indies to a stunning win with seven balls to spare.

West Indies captain Rovman Powell highlighted the importance of their batting against spin, acknowledging the uncertainties of cricket.

With this victory, the West Indies take a 2-0 lead in the five-match series after winning the first T20I in Tarouba by four runs.

Tilak Varma, who impressed in the Indian Premier League with 343 runs for Mumbai Indians, played a brilliant knock of 51 from 41 balls before being dismissed by Akeal Hosein. His effort, along with contributions from Ishan Kishan and skipper Hardik Pandya, helped India reach a modest total.

In their chase, the West Indies got off to a poor start, losing Brandon King and Johnson Charles to Pandya in the opening over. However, Nicholas Pooran took charge and played an incredible innings, smashing six fours and four sixes.

Although the West Indies looked in control, they stumbled from 126/4 to 129/8, thanks to Yuzvendra Chahal’s three wickets in the 16th over. With just two wickets in hand, they needed 24 runs from the last four overs.

Nevertheless, Joseph and Hosein held their nerves and guided the West Indies to a remarkable win.

Earlier, the tourists had won the preceding two-Test series 1-0 and the ODIs 2-1 against the West Indies.

India 152/7 (Tilak 51, Kishan 27) lost to the West Indies 155/8 (Pooran 67, Pandya 3/35) by two wickets.

The left-hander’s unbeaten knock of 137 runs came off just 55 deliveries, featuring ten boundaries and an impressive 13 sixes. He achieved the three-figure mark in a mere 40 balls, leading his team to successfully chase down the target of 184 runs with four overs to spare and seven wickets in hand.

Reflecting on the remarkable achievement, Pooran spoke about the team’s determination to create history despite facing challenges due to the absence of their captain and a few players. He expressed pride in the collective effort of the team, emphasizing their preparation and belief in each other. The team knew the pitch was favorable for batting, and they had been ready for this crucial moment since a week ago.

In the first innings, having won the toss and elected to bowl, MI New York’s bowlers limited Seattle to 183/9 in their allotted 20 overs. Trent Boult and Rashid Khan stood out with three wickets each, leading the bowling attack effectively.

For Seattle, Quinton de Kock showcased an impressive display with the bat, scoring 87 runs off 52 deliveries. However, his efforts were not enough to overcome the dominant performance by Nicholas Pooran and his team, as MI New York emerged victorious to claim the MLC 2023 title.

Shai Hope and Nicholas Pooran displayed exceptional batting performances, scoring centuries to lead the West Indies to a convincing 101-run victory over Nepal at the World Cup Qualifier in Harare on Thursday.

Hope contributed a remarkable 132 runs, while Pooran played aggressively, smashing a quick 115. The duo formed a formidable partnership of 216 runs for the fourth wicket, rescuing their team after a shaky start. The West Indies posted a challenging total of 339/7.

The West Indies got off to a rocky start, losing Kyle Mayers early for just one run and Johnson Charles for a duck, leaving them at 9/2. However, opener Brandon King stabilized the innings with a score of 32 before being dismissed by leg-spinner Sandeep Lamichhane.

“We were put on the back foot there,” said Hope. “The key was absorbing as much pressure as possible and then finding a way to transfer that pressure in the back end. Pooran made it a lot easier for me. The aim was to take it as deep as possible to give us the best chance towards the end.”

Hope and Pooran took control of the game in the 16th over, shifting the momentum in favor of the West Indies. Nepal’s dropped catch off Pooran early in his innings proved costly for the opposition. Wicket-keeper Aasif Sheikh missed an opportunity to dismiss Pooran off the bowling of Lalit Rajbanshi when the batsman was on just three runs.

While Hope maintained a steady pace, Pooran took on the role of the aggressor. Both players reached their respective centuries in the 40th over. Hope completed his 15th ODI hundred off 107 balls, while Pooran reached his second one-day century off 81 balls, four years after his first.

Eventually, Pooran was dismissed for 115 by Dipendra Singh Airee, who took a stunning catch off his own bowling. Rovman Powell (29) and Jason Holder (16 not out) contributed quick runs to ensure a formidable total for the West Indies. Hope was caught at long-off in the final over for 132, and the West Indies ended their innings at 339/7, with Lalit Rajbanshi taking 3/52.

Nepal struggled during their chase as Alzarri Joseph dismantled Kushal Bhurtel’s stumps in the second over. Bhim Sharki followed suit, getting caught behind off Jason Holder’s bowling while attempting a scoop shot. Although several Nepali batsmen made promising starts, only Aarif Sheikh managed to surpass fifty, scoring 63 before falling victim to a brilliant catch by Pooran in the deep. Nepal was eventually bowled out for 238.

Holder was the pick of the bowlers for the West Indies, claiming 3/34, while Joseph, Keemo Paul, and Akeal Hosein all took two wickets each.

With two wins in the bag, the West Indies moved ahead of hosts Zimbabwe at the top of Group A, based on net run rate. The West Indies and Zimbabwe will clash in their next match on Saturday.

In the other match on Thursday, the Netherlands bounced back from their initial defeat against Zimbabwe by inflicting a third consecutive loss on the United States. Shayan Jahangir top-scored with 71 for the USA, who managed to reach 211/8. However, Dutch captain Scott Edwards guided his team to a five-wicket victory with an unbeaten 67, supported by Teja Nidamanuru’s 58.

With the USA now eliminated from contention, the Netherlands and Nepal will face each other on Saturday in a crucial match that will likely determine which team advances to the Super Six stage.

IPL lovers witnessed devastating innings on Monday (April 10). And that destructive inning was played by Caribbean batsman Nicholas Pooran of Lakhnore. Puran’s innings of 62 runs off just 19 balls have set many records. Chennai Super Kings batsman Ajinkya Rahane had the fastest half-century before Pooran in the current IPL. He scored a 19-ball fifty against Mumbai. Puran topped the list topping him. He scored a 15-ball fifty against RCB.

Meanwhile, Puran’s 15-ball fifty is the joint-second fastest in IPL history. Before Pooran, Yusuf Pathan and Sunil Narine scored 15-ball half-centuries in IPL. Yusuf achieved this feat in 2014 and Narine in 2017. Against Royal Challengers Bangalore, Pooran scored 56 of his 62 runs with boundaries, which is 93.54 percent of Puran’s runs. Suresh Raina tops this list. He scored 87 runs for Chennai against Punjab in 2014, including 84 as a boundary. This Caribbean batsman has also made it to the list of players who scored more than fifty runs at the highest strike rate in IPL. Puran is fourth behind Pat Cummins, Suresh Raina, and Yusuf Pathan. Australian captain Pat Cummins topped the list with his 15-ball unbeaten 56 against Mumbai in 2022 for KKR at a strike rate of 373.33.
