Wankhede Stadium Prepares for 2023 World Cup with New Floodlights and Revamped Hospitality Boxes

In anticipation of the upcoming 2023 ODI World Cup scheduled for October-November, the renowned Wankhede Stadium is set to undergo a transformation. The stadium will receive a modern upgrade, including the installation of new LED floodlights and the refurbishment of its hospitality boxes.

Notably, the Wankhede Stadium has been selected as one of the five venues by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) for renovation and improvements ahead of the prestigious World Cup. Apart from hosting an India game, the stadium is also slated to hold a highly-anticipated semi-final match.

While the work is yet to commence, the decision to invite tenders for the replacement of floodlights aims to ensure a smooth execution of significant projects without being constrained by tight deadlines. As the home ground for the Mumbai Indians, the five-time IPL champions, the Wankhede Stadium recently underwent enhancements to its outfield after hosting seven IPL 2023 league matches.

The Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) has invited sealed tenders for the proposed LED floodlighting system at Wankhede Stadium, providing comprehensive details in the tender document available on their website. In addition, the MCA is seeking applications from reputed organizations to serve as Project Management Consultants for the renovation of hospitality boxes within the stadium. Further decisions regarding the stadium’s improvements are expected to be made during the MCA’s apex council meeting on June 30.

The Wankhede Stadium holds immense historical and cultural significance as one of India’s most famous cricket grounds. It underwent extensive renovations prior to the country’s hosting of the last 50-over World Cup in 2011. In that tournament, India emerged victorious in a thrilling final against Sri Lanka, ending a 28-year wait for their second World Cup title, which remains their most recent triumph in white-ball cricket formats.

April 24 this year is Sachin Tendulkar’s 50th birthday. Before that, the Mumbai Cricket Association is going to honor the legendary cricketer especially. As a token of gratitude, the authorities built a statue of him.

Sachin started his cricket career at Wankhed Stadium. He also played his last international match in this stadium. That is why the Mumbai Cricket Association authorities are going to arrange a special honor for Sachin. A statue of the Little Master will be installed in the stadium. The Mumbai Cricket Association is going to install his portrait to honor the contribution of the cricket legend.

Following this, Sachin visited the Wankhede Stadium on Tuesday (February 28). His wife Anjali was also with him. He also visited the place where this special statue will be installed. After visiting the place, Sachin said, ‘I was completely shocked at first. But I am thrilled. My cricket career started at this stadium. I also played the last match on this field. A circle of life is complete here. The best moment of my life, winning the World Cup is also in this stadium. I am very honored to know that my idol will sit there.’It is known that this statue will be inaugurated on April 23. The ‘God of Cricket’ will celebrate his 50th birthday on April 24 next day.
