1974 – Birth of Ricky Ponting
One of Australia’s finest-ever cricketers, Ricky Ponting was born in 1974. After falling heartbreakingly short of a century on Test debut, he went on to become a batting colossus, admired for his fierce competitiveness and sublime pull shot. Ponting’s career swung between purple patches and lean runs, but at his peak he averaged well into the 50s. As captain, he oversaw Australia’s dominance across formats, winning World Cups and reclaiming the Ashes in emphatic style in 2006–07. He retired from international cricket in 2012, leaving behind a legacy of runs, trophies, and leadership.
