1976 – Mark Boucher: A Record-Breaking Wicketkeeping Titan
Born on this day, Mark Boucher often lived in the shadow of fellow keeper-batters Andy Flower and Adam Gilchrist, yet carved out his own legacy with unmatched consistency behind the stumps. He still holds the record for the most Test dismissals by a wicketkeeper (555) and was the first to claim 500 Test catches. Boucher seamlessly replaced Dave Richardson in 1997-98 and became a vital piece of a South African side that regularly ranked in the top two across formats. Though Gilchrist briefly overtook him, Boucher reclaimed the record in 2007. A fierce competitor, he played 75 consecutive Tests and contributed significantly with the bat—five Test centuries and explosive ODI innings, including a fifty in just 22 balls. His career ended abruptly in 2012 after a freak eye injury from a flying bail during a warm-up match, forcing him into retirement.
