1894 – Birth of England Captain Arthur Gilligan
Arthur Gilligan, one of the few fast bowlers to captain England, was born on this day. Partnering Maurice Tate, he formed a lethal opening attack for Sussex and England. Their most famous feat came in the 1924 Edgbaston Test, where they bowled South Africa out for just 30, with Gilligan taking astonishing figures of 6 for 7. Although England lost the Ashes the following winter, Gilligan led them to an innings victory in Melbourne — their first win over Australia since the First World War.
