2009 – Sehwag’s Missed Triple-Century Magic

Virender Sehwag came agonizingly close to becoming the first man to score three Test triple-centuries. Fans filled the Wankhede on day three expecting history, but Sehwag added only nine runs to his overnight score before falling for a breathtaking 293 off 254 balls, decorated with 40 fours and seven sixes. Despite missing the milestone, he became the third-fastest Indian to reach 6000 Test runs.

2021 – Ajaz Patel Joins the ‘Perfect 10’ Club

In Mumbai, Ajaz Patel etched his name alongside Jim Laker and Anil Kumble by taking all ten wickets in a Test innings—the first to do it away from home, the first in a first innings, and the first in a match his team lost. His brilliance, however, wasn’t enough to rescue New Zealand. Bowled out for 62 in their first innings, they eventually lost by 372 runs. R Ashwin and Jayant Yadav finished the second innings with four wickets each, as Ashwin claimed match figures of 8 for 42.

1995 – Atherton’s Epic Stand in Johannesburg

Chasing a mammoth 479 or battling 165 overs for survival, England looked doomed against South Africa. But Mike Atherton delivered his finest performance—batting for 643 minutes and 492 balls to finish on a heroic 185* in the Johannesburg Test. Jack Russell offered stubborn support with a painstaking 29 off 235 balls, after also taking a record 11 catches in the match. Fittingly, the pair shared the Man-of-the-Match award.

1950 – Chaos on a Sticky Gabba Wicket

The Gabba witnessed one of Test cricket’s wildest days as England and Australia combined for 102 runs and 20 wickets after lunch on a rain-affected, treacherous pitch. Both teams rushed through declarations trying to manipulate the conditions. Australia eventually prevailed by 70 runs—helped largely by batting before the storm hit—despite Len Hutton’s remarkable unbeaten 62.

1974 – Thomson’s Brutal Arrival

England arrived in Brisbane confident their experienced top order could handle Australia’s pace attack. They hadn’t heard of Jeff Thomson yet. In just his second Test, Thomson tore through England with raw speed, taking nine wickets and leaving broken bones and shattered confidence behind. Australia crushed England by 166 runs and went on to reclaim the Ashes 4–1.

Despite that, Agarkar shone in ODIs, once becoming the fastest to 50 wickets, and played a pivotal role in India’s famous 2003–04 Adelaide win with 6 for 41. He later captained Mumbai to their 40th Ranji Trophy title.

1964 – Cricket’s Most One-Sided Match

In Lahore, Railways annihilated Dera Ismail Khan by an incredible innings and 851 runs—the most lopsided match in cricket history. Railways piled up 910 for 6 declared before bundling out DIK for 32 and 27. Afaq Khan took 7 for 14 in the first innings, while Ahad Khan cleaned up the second with an astonishing 9 wickets for 7 runs.

1995 – Pakistan Finally Win in Sydney

Pakistan snapped a 14-year drought in Australia with a 74-run win in the Sydney Test. Ijaz Ahmed’s superb 137 and Mushtaq Ahmed’s 9-wicket match haul sealed the victory. Under Mark Taylor, Australia had a habit of easing off in dead rubbers—this was their seventh consecutive winless Test in Sydney.

1858 – Billy Gunn: Cricketer and Craftsman

Billy Gunn, born on this day, played 11 Tests for England and later founded the legendary Gunn & Moore brand. A technically gifted batter, he scored the first Test hundred at Old Trafford in 1893 and even represented England in football. He passed away in 1921.

1996 – Sun Stops Play in Gujranwala

In unusual scenes, play was halted because the sun was shining directly into the batters’ eyes. The ODI between Pakistan and New Zealand was reduced to 46 overs a side, and Pakistan edged home by 11 runs thanks to Wasim Akram’s rapid 52 and Saqlain Mushtaq’s 5 for 44.

1977 – Mohammad Nazir: A Career of Stops and Starts

Fast-medium bowler Mohammad Nazir made a promising debut against Zimbabwe but never fully established himself. Despite returning to Test cricket after a seven-year gap in 2006, the emergence of Mohammad Asif and Umar Gul limited his opportunities. His decision to join the rebel Indian Cricket League further reduced his chances of a sustained international career.

1979 – Tim McIntosh: A Late-Blooming Kiwi Opener

Born on this day, Tim McIntosh followed the patient, disciplined style associated with Mark Richardson. He earned a Test debut at age 29, and after a nervy start in Dunedin, struck a composed century in his next match in Napier. His second Test hundred came a year later in Hyderabad.
