Jasprit Bumrah arrived as a rare fast-bowling talent — someone who could hit the stumps, beat both edges, and swing the ball late. His unique, sling-armed release caught attention instantly, and his yorkers soon became his signature. He first rose to prominence in the IPL and played in all five of Mumbai Indians’ title-winning campaigns between 2013 and 2020. MS Dhoni famously called him the “find of the tour” after Bumrah topped the wicket charts in India’s 2015–16 T20I series in Australia.

His first year in Test cricket was extraordinary: 48 wickets at 21.02 in just nine Tests, with match-winning spells in Johannesburg and Melbourne. Bumrah’s sharp swing and seam movement were crucial in India’s historic series wins in Australia (2018–19 and 2019–20). He then took 18 wickets in India’s memorable 2–1 lead in England in 2021 (the fifth Test was postponed). In 2024, after leading India to iconic wins in Cape Town and Perth as stand-in captain, Bumrah equalled Kapil Dev’s record for most five-fors by an Indian outside Asia.

Andrew Flintoff’s early career was stop-start, derailed by injuries and inconsistencies. But once he found his rhythm, he became one of England’s most charismatic allrounders. His golden year came in 2005: the Ashes belonged to him. With heroic spells and powerful batting, Flintoff became the heartbeat of England’s historic 2005 triumph and was crowned ICC Player of the Year. What followed was a slow decline as injuries mounted and off-field issues increased, but at his peak there was no greater spectacle than Flintoff with bat or ball. He retired after helping England win the 2009 Ashes 2–1, and eventually walked away from all forms the following year.

Ravindra Jadeja debuted in 2009 and initially made headlines for his all-round impact in the IPL. Chennai Super Kings valued him so highly they bought him for US$2 million in 2012. In ODIs he contributed steady runs and a wicket per match, but his true rise came in Tests. Debuting in 2012, he quickly became India’s third spinner and an electric fielder. His 24 wickets in the 2013 home series against Australia cemented his place.
Over the years he developed into Ravi Ashwin’s perfect partner, producing standout series against New Zealand (2016–17), England, and Australia. He scored his maiden Test hundred in Rajkot in 2018. In 2024, Jadeja became only the third Indian to reach 3000 Test runs and 300 wickets. A year later, he retired from T20Is but continued in the IPL as a key force for CSK.

Cyril Washbrook, one of Lancashire’s most admired greats, formed a legendary Test opening partnership with Len Hutton. Their 359-run stand in Johannesburg (1948–49) remains England’s highest for the first wicket. Across a career spanning from 1933 to 1964, Washbrook piled up over 34,000 first-class runs and 76 centuries, carving his way into English cricket folklore.

Frank Hayes made a stunning debut in 1973, smashing 106 against a strong West Indian attack featuring Sobers, Gibbs, Boyce, and Julien. But in eight more Tests — all against the West Indies — his next highest score was just 29. Between injuries, captaincy struggles at Lancashire, and misfortune (including a freak ankle break at Lord’s), Hayes’ promising career faded quickly.

With six debutants after the World Series Cricket split, Australia fielded a new-look side under 41-year-old Bob Simpson, returning from a decade-long retirement. Chasing 341, India fell just short, bowled out for 324 despite a brilliant 113 from Sunil Gavaskar.

Peter Willey debuted for Northamptonshire at just 16 and became known for both his gritty batting and his unusual stance, which always looked like it could land him in trouble. He featured in 26 Tests, including the iconic 1981 Headingley match. After retiring, he turned to umpiring, eventually becoming one of the most respected officials in world cricket.

Shreyas Iyer became a sensation in 2015 when Delhi Daredevils signed him for a record ₹2.6 crore as an uncapped player. Between 2018 and 2020, he delivered consistently, crossing 400 runs in three straight IPL seasons. With a brilliant first-class record behind him, he made his Test debut in 2021 and instantly impressed with a century and a fifty in his maiden match against New Zealand.

At Hamilton, Kane Williamson played a masterpiece: a career-best 251 against a quality West Indies attack. After NZ declared at 519/7, their bowlers dismantled the visitors twice — Southee with 4/35 in the first innings, and Wagner and Jamieson sealing it on day four. It remains New Zealand’s biggest win over West Indies.

Javed Miandad made his 100th Test memorable, scoring 145 as Shoaib Mohammad added an unbeaten 203. The match against India drifted into a high-scoring draw.

England began the final day needing 174 with six wickets in hand. Within 20 overs, the match was over — Mitchell Starc’s five-for and tight spells from Australia’s bowlers sealed a decisive victory. It followed a far more dominant ten-wicket win in Brisbane.

Warren Bardsley, a compact left-hander, scored twin hundreds at The Oval in 1909 — the first player ever to do so in a Test. He captained Australia twice and, in 1926, carried his bat for 193 at Lord’s. He still holds the record for most Test runs (575) by a visiting batter at Lord’s.

India were bowled out for just 126, but their bowlers responded brilliantly. With the last pair batting and scores level, Sachin Tendulkar dismissed the final West Indies wicket — caught by Azharuddin — to secure a tie. It was West Indies’ second tied ODI in two weeks.

Brian Lara made 44 on debut in Lahore, but the innings was overshadowed by Carl Hooper’s 134. Pakistan were blown away for 122 by Ambrose and Bishop, but the match eventually ended in a draw.

RP Singh had a dream debut in 2006, earning Man of the Match in Faisalabad. His best performance came at Lord’s in 2007, where he picked 7 for 117.
He shone in Perth in 2008 and in the inaugural T20 World Cup, but inconsistency — and a surprise recall in 2011 while he was on holiday — saw his international career fade.

Sean Ervine, known for his whirling bowling action, delivered his best ODI innings in the 2003–04 VB Series, adding 202 with Stuart Carlisle against India. He was among the 15 players who famously walked out of Zimbabwe cricket in 2004.
