1942 – The Birth of Roy Fredericks: A Fearless West Indian Opener
In an era when openers were known for their defensive play, Roy Fredericks brought flair and aggression to the crease. Born on this day, the left-hander stunned the world with his fearless stroke play. His unforgettable 169 against Dennis Lillee and Jeff Thomson at Perth (1975–76) remains one of the boldest Test innings ever. Despite being only 5ft 6in tall, Fredericks packed a punch, later scoring 517 runs during the 1976 England tour. Over 59 Tests, he became a West Indian icon before retiring in 1977. After cricket, he served as Guyana’s sports minister before passing away in 2000.
