2023 – Angelo Mathews’ Unforgettable “Timed Out” Drama

In one of the most dramatic moments in cricket history, Angelo Mathews became the first batter ever to be timed out in international cricket — and it happened during a World Cup match in Delhi.

As Mathews prepared to face Shakib Al Hasan, he noticed his helmet strap had broken and signaled for a replacement. But before he could get ready, Shakib — Bangladesh’s captain — appealed to the umpires. Since Mathews hadn’t faced his first ball within the two-minute limit set by ICC rules, he was declared timed out. The incident sparked controversy, and Bangladesh went on to win the game by three wickets.

1999 – Slater’s Blitz in Brisbane

Michael Slater produced an explosive performance to put Australia in control against Pakistan in the first Test at Brisbane. Chasing a total of 367, Slater attacked from the start, smashing 169 runs and sharing a 269-run opening stand (a record against Pakistan) with Greg Blewett. Mark Waugh added a classy century, while Adam Gilchrist (81 off 88) and Shane Warne (86) piled on the runs late in the innings. 1956 – The “Kamikaze Kid” Graeme Wood

Born this year, Graeme Wood was a gritty left-hand opener from Western Australia known for his stubbornness and wild running between wickets — earning him the nickname “Kamikaze Kid.” Wood’s career had highs and lows: after back-to-back Test centuries in 1980 and 1981, he followed up with three consecutive ducks. Though his form dipped during the 1985 England tour, he returned in 1988–89 with a defiant hundred against a fierce West Indies pace attack. However, he was dropped soon after to make way for a new left-handed opener — Mark Taylor.

2018 – Zimbabwe’s Historic Win in Sylhet

Zimbabwe earned their first away Test win in 17 years — and only their third overseas Test victory overall — by defeating Bangladesh in Sylhet.
The visitors bowled Bangladesh out for 169 on the fourth day, with spinners Brandon Mavuta and Sikandar Raza taking ten wickets between them. Hamilton Masakadza and Sean Williams guided Zimbabwe to a memorable triumph after dismissing Bangladesh for just 143 in the first innings.

2022 – Netherlands Stun South Africa

In one of the T20 World Cup’s biggest upsets, Netherlands knocked South Africa out of the tournament. Stephan Myburgh’s brisk start and a solid middle-order effort from Tom Cooper and Colin Ackermann helped them post 158. India’s attempt to prepare a spin-friendly pitch in Calcutta backfired spectacularly. The hosts fell to a 94-run defeat against Australia in the third Test.Out of 39 wickets that fell, 35 went to spinners. Richie Benaud shone for Australia with 6 for 52 and 5 for 53, while Ghulam Ahmed claimed 7 for 49 and 3 for 81 for India. Chasing 231, India collapsed, giving Australia a 2–0 series win — and marking the end of captain Ian Johnson’s 45-Test career.

1921 – Birth of Allrounder Geoff “Boney” Rabone

Born in 1921, Geoff Rabone was one of New Zealand’s most versatile cricketers — an aggressive batter, offspinner, slip fielder, and a respected leader. Though he captained New Zealand in five of his 12 Tests without recording a win, his individual efforts were heroic. Against South Africa in Durban (1953), Rabone scored 107 and 68, virtually carrying the team single-handedly. He played his final Test in 1955 against England, when New Zealand were bowled out for their all-time low of 26.

1994 – Sri Lanka’s Big Win in Harare

Sri Lanka crushed Zimbabwe by 191 runs in Harare to win the ODI series 2–1 — their biggest victory (by runs) at the time. The dominant performance underscored the rise of a confident Sri Lankan side ready to make its mark on world cricket.

1985 – Birth of Legspinner Devendra Bishoo

Born this year, Devendra Bishoo went on to become one of West Indies’ most promising legspinners. He burst onto the scene in 2011, taking 4 for 68 on debut against Pakistan and earning early success. Although he lost his spot amid competition from Sunil Narine and Shane Shillingford, Bishoo made a strong comeback in 2015. His standout performance came a year later — 8 for 49 against Pakistan in Dubai, one of the finest spells by a West Indies spinner.
