1947 – Birth of Rod Marsh, Australian Cricket Icon

Born this year, Rod Marsh became one of the greatest wicketkeepers in cricket history. Known initially as “Iron Gloves” during his tough first series against England in 1970–71, Marsh refined his skills to form the legendary duo “c Marsh b Lillee”, which appears 95 times in Test history. He was the first Australian keeper to score a Test hundred and famously hit an unbeaten 110 in the 1976–77 Centenary Test. After retirement, Marsh shaped future stars as director of Australia’s cricket academy, later leading England’s academy and serving as a selector. He passed away in 2022 at the age of 74.

1968 – Lee Germon, Test Captain on Debut

New Zealand wicketkeeper Lee Germon made his debut as captain against India in Bangalore in 1995–96. Despite the pressure, he top-scored in both innings (48 and 41) in an eight-wicket defeat. His captaincy stint was brief — New Zealand won only once in his 12 Tests — and he was replaced by Stephen Fleming after a home defeat to England in 1996–97.

2021 – Yorkshire Racism Controversy

The England board suspended Yorkshire’s rights to host international and major matches following allegations of institutional racism by former player Azeem Rafiq. The independent investigation confirmed Rafiq faced racial harassment. 1912 – Giff Vivian, Consistent Kiwi Batter

New Zealand batter Giff Vivian debuted at 18 and made an immediate impact, top-scoring at The Oval in 1931. He played only seven Tests, with six fifties from ten innings, and scored his sole hundred against South Africa in Wellington. Injuries and the Second World War curtailed his career, though his son Graham also played five Tests for New Zealand. Vivian passed away in 1983.

1963 – David Williams, Memorable High Point

West Indies wicketkeeper David Williams followed in Jeff Dujon’s shadow but struggled with the bat. In 11 Tests, he scored just seven ducks in 18 innings. His standout performance came against England in Trinidad in 1997–98, where he scored 65 and shared a match-winning 129-run partnership with Carl Hooper.

2000 – Thrilling ODI Showdown: South Africa vs New Zealand

In Cape Town, Roger Twose scored his only ODI hundred and Chris Cairns hit 84 off 72 balls. South Africa posted 256/9, looking poised for victory, but Lance Klusener’s unbeaten 59 off 42 balls sealed a thrilling win for the hosts, completing a 5–0 series sweep.

1967 – Asif Mujtaba’s Unlikely Heroics

Born this year, Asif Mujtaba debuted for Pakistan at 19. He famously scored 60* in a one-wicket win over Australia in 1986–87 and later tied a match against Australia in Hobart (1992–93) with a dramatic six off Steve Waugh’s last ball. Despite a strong first-class record, he averaged 24 in 25 Tests and 26 in 66 ODIs.

1938 – Alan Jones, First-Class Run Machine

Welsh batter Alan Jones scored 36,049 first-class runs without playing an official Test. He played a single unofficial match against the Rest of the World in 1970, scoring 5 and 0. Later, Jones became Glamorgan’s director of coaching, leaving a lasting legacy in county cricket.
