1911 – Birth of India’s first great batter, Vijay Merchant:

Born in Bombay, Vijay Merchant was a master technician and one of India’s earliest batting icons. Graceful and precise, he averaged a stunning 71.64 in first-class cricket — second only to Don Bradman — and 98.75 in the Ranji Trophy. Though he played just ten Tests, all against England, his elegance and consistency set the foundation for future legends like Sunil Gavaskar and Sachin Tendulkar. Merchant later became an influential cricket administrator and writer before his passing in 1987.

1861 – Birth of Frederick “Nutty” Martin:

A left-arm bowler from Kent, Martin’s Test career was brief but unforgettable. On debut in 1890 at The Oval, he took 12 for 102 — the best-ever figures by a debutant at the time. Despite his brilliance, he played only two Tests but ended his first-class career with an impressive 1317 wickets at 17.38.

1946 – Birth of Ashok Mankad:

Son of Indian great Vinoo Mankad, Ashok was a prolific domestic performer who couldn’t fully replicate his success at the international level. Despite a first-class average of nearly 51, he averaged less than half of that in 22 Tests. Still, his consistency and cheerful personality made him a respected figure in Indian cricket.

1952 – Birth of Trevor Chappell:

The youngest of the famous Chappell brothers, Trevor played only three Tests but gained worldwide notoriety for the infamous underarm delivery in 1981 against New Zealand — a moment that changed cricket laws forever. Later, he served as a coach for Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, contributing to their cricketing development.

1994 – Bob Woolmer’s tough start as South Africa coach:

In his first match as South Africa’s coach, Woolmer’s side fell seven runs short while chasing 208 against Australia in Lahore. Though the series began poorly, Woolmer went on to build one of the most dominant ODI sides of the 1990s.

1995 – Aamer Sohail’s day with the ball:

Known for his aggressive batting, Sohail turned match-winner with the ball in the Singer Trophy against Sri Lanka, taking 4 for 22 — his best ODI figures — to help Pakistan secure an 83-run victory.

2001 – Birth of Annabel Sutherland:

Australia’s rising all-round star Annabel Sutherland was born on this day. A fast-bowling all-rounder, she made her international debut as a teenager and set a record with a 210-run double century and five wickets in the same Test against South Africa in 2024. A World Cup winner and consistent WBBL performer, she’s considered the future of Australian women’s cricket.

2002 – Pakistan’s two-day collapse in Sharjah:

Playing in searing 51°C heat, Pakistan suffered one of their worst defeats — dismissed for 59 and 53 against Australia. Shane Warne spun webs around them with twin 4-fors, while Matthew Hayden’s gritty century earned him the Player of the Match award.

2019 – Barbados Tridents lift the CPL title:

In Tarouba, Barbados Tridents ended Guyana Amazon Warriors’ 11-match winning streak to claim their second CPL crown. Jonathan Carter’s unbeaten 50 and Raymon Reifer’s tight bowling sealed a memorable 27-run win.
