The man who invented the googly. Bosanquet perfected the “bosie,” a leg-spinner’s delivery that turns like an off-break. First googly bowled in Australia in 1903-04 removed Victor Trumper’s middle stump. Played 7 Tests; strike rate of 38.8 balls per wicket, surpassed only by George Lohmann and Mike Procter. Died 1936.
1941 – Birth of John Snow
English fast bowler, author of Cricket Rebel. Took 27 wickets in 1967–68 West Indies tour, and 31 in the 1970–71 Ashes series. Best Test figures: 7/40 in Sydney. Famous for short-pitched deliveries that provoked Terry Jenner. Published two poetry books and founded a travel company after retirement.
1964 – Birth of Fanie de Villiers
South African swing bowler. Debuted at 29 in 1993–94. Famous performances include ten wickets in Sydney, 10/108 vs Pakistan (1994–95), and crucial lower-order runs: 66 at No. 10 and 67 in Ahmedabad (1996). Remembered for injudicious bouncer at Devon Malcolm at The Oval (1994).
1971 – Birth of Hitesh Modi
Kenyan cricketer, debuted 1992, mainstay of Kenya’s middle order in 1996, 1999, and 2003 World Cups. Became captain in 2004 during senior players’ strike. Dropped post-2006 due to poor one-day form and UK base. Father Subhash uniquely umpired a one-day international his son played in (2001).
1976 – Pakistan vs New Zealand Test, Lahore
Pakistan won by six wickets. Javed Miandad scored 163 + 25*, finishing with 8,832 Test runs at 52.57. One of only two batters (with Herbert Sutcliffe) whose average never dipped below 50.
1987 – Viv Richards, World Cup, Karachi
Richards scored 181 off 125 balls vs Sri Lanka, last 81 runs off 27 balls. West Indies posted 360/4, and won by 191 runs with only 4 wickets down. Ashantha de Mel ended with 1/97, one of the most expensive ten-over spells in ODI history.
1987 – England vs Pakistan, World Cup, Rawalpindi
England collapsed needing 34 off 4 overs with six wickets in hand; all six fell for 15 runs in 16 balls. Abdul Qadir (4/31) and England’s panic-run outs contributed to Pakistan’s victory.
1999 – West Indies vs Sri Lanka, Sharjah
Curtly Ambrose bowled 10-5-5-1, second-most economical ODI ten-over spell. West Indies were 115/6 chasing 179; Jimmy Adams guided them home with 74*.
2000 – Birth of Amelia Kerr
New Zealand leg-spin allrounder. Youngest cricketer to score an ODI double-century (233* vs Ireland, 2018) at age 17. Took first ODI five-for in same match. Key in NZ’s first T20 World Cup win (2024) with 3/24 and 43 runs; Player of the Tournament and top wicket-taker.
2019 – India vs South Africa, Pune
India won by innings in just two days. Made 601/5 declared; South Africa bowled out twice. Virat Kohli 254* (7th double hundred, passed 7,000 runs). Enforced follow-on; Umesh Yadav, R Ashwin, Mohammed Shami cleaned up SA in 67.2 overs. Wriddhiman Saha lauded for glovework.
