1969 – Birth of Shane Warne
Shane Warne, born today, redefined legspin and made it a dominant force in Test cricket again. His career haul of 708 Test wickets included countless match-winning spells, but his most famous delivery remains the “Ball of the Century” to Mike Gatting at Old Trafford in 1993. Warne was central to Australia’s 1999 World Cup triumph and reserved his best for the Ashes, with hauls of 34 (1993), 27 (1994-95), 24 (1997), 31 (2001), and 40 (2005). In Sri Lanka in 2003-04, he took 26 wickets in three Tests, and he bowed out in style after Australia’s 5-0 Ashes sweep in 2006-07. Off the field, he was suspended for a year in 2003 for failing a drugs test, but he returned stronger. Later, he captained Rajasthan Royals to victory in the inaugural IPL and became a familiar face in commentary boxes. Warne died in March 2022, aged 52, of a suspected heart attack while on holiday in Thailand.
