1934 – Lance Gibbs: The First Spinner to 300 Test Wickets

Lance Gibbs, born in 1934, became the first spinner to claim 300 Test wickets. With his slim frame and long fingers, he combined sharp spin and bounce with relentless accuracy. Across 79 Tests, he bagged 309 wickets, including 18 five-wicket hauls, conceding runs at just 1.99 an over. His golden spell came between 1960 and 1962, highlighted by three wickets in four balls in Sydney, a hat-trick in Adelaide, and the unforgettable 8-for against India in Barbados where he gave away only 38 runs in over 53 overs.

1941 – David Steele: The Bank Clerk Who Defied Lillee & Thomson

Born in 1941, David Steele earned fame at 33 when he debuted against Australia’s fearsome pace duo, Lillee and Thomson, in 1975. Grey-haired and bespectacled, Steele surprised everyone by amassing 365 runs at 60.83. His grit and resilience made him a national favorite, even winning him BBC Sports Personality of the Year. During his benefit year, he famously received a meat chop from a local butcher for every run – ending with 1756 runs that summer.

1957 – Chris Broad: From Ashes Heroics to Controversy

Chris Broad, father of Stuart Broad, was born in 1957. A left-handed opener with an awkward stance, he shone in England’s 1986–87 Ashes triumph, scoring centuries in three straight Tests. However, his career was marred by controversy – refusing to walk in Lahore and smashing stumps in Sydney. Poor fielding, back injuries, and a fiery temperament cut short his international run, though he later became an ICC match referee.

1983 – Anshuman Gaekwad: The Slowest Double Hundred

India’s Anshuman Gaekwad, in 1983, set a unique record with the slowest-ever double century in Test cricket at that time. Against Pakistan in Jullundur, he batted for 652 minutes and faced 426 deliveries to reach 200. The match eventually fizzled out into a draw, but his effort was etched in cricketing history.

1934 – Lindsay Kline: The Man Behind a Tied Test’s Final Ball

Australian left-arm wrist-spinner Lindsay Kline, also born in 1934, played just 13 Tests but left a mark. He claimed a hat-trick in his second Test and famously faced the last ball of the historic tied Test against West Indies in 1960–61. His dogged 100-minute resistance in Adelaide also helped Australia escape with a draw – a dramatic farewell to Test cricket.

1991 – Mominul Haque: Bangladesh’s Mr. Consistency

Mominul Haque, born in 1991, became Bangladesh’s most reliable Test batter. Between 2013 and 2015, he scored fifties in 11 consecutive Tests, just one short of AB de Villiers’ world record. In 2018, he enjoyed another purple patch, scoring four hundreds in seven Tests, including two in a single match against Sri Lanka.

2024 – Sri Lanka Dominate New Zealand in Galle

In 2024, Sri Lanka crushed New Zealand by an innings in Galle. Centuries from Dinesh Chandimal, Kusal Mendis, and Kamindu Mendis – who also became the fastest to 1000 Test runs in 75 years – powered Sri Lanka to 602/5. Spinners Prabath Jayasuriya and debutant Nishan Peiris shared 18 wickets across the match, bowling New Zealand out for just 88 in the first innings – their lowest against Sri Lanka. Peiris finished with nine wickets, the third-best debut figures for a Sri Lankan.

1995 – Saleem Elahi’s Dream Debut

In 1995, 18-year-old Saleem Elahi announced himself with a century on ODI debut against Sri Lanka in Gujranwala. Without even having played a first-class game, he struck an unbeaten 102, finishing the innings with a majestic straight six to complete his hundred. He became only the fourth player in history to achieve the feat on debut.

1997 – Zimbabwe vs New Zealand Ends in Thrilling Draw

The second Test between Zimbabwe and New Zealand in 1997 ended in a tense draw in Bulawayo. Set 286 to win, New Zealand finished at 275/8, just 11 runs short of victory. The game was lit up by Guy Whittall’s unbeaten 203 and Adam Huckle’s remarkable but expensive 11-for-255. The series ended 0-0, but the match was anything but dull.
