1986 – Birth of R Ashwin
R Ashwin, born today, became one of India’s greatest offspinners and the fastest bowler to reach 300 Test wickets. He first made his mark in the IPL, replaced Harbhajan Singh in India’s ODI side in 2011, and impressed on Test debut with nine wickets—the second-best figures by an Indian debutant. Ashwin went on to dominate at home, taking 18 wickets in two Tests against New Zealand in 2012, 7 for 103 against Australia in 2013, and 7 for 66 against South Africa in 2015. He helped India to historic wins in Sri Lanka in 2015, scored two Test hundreds on the 2016 West Indies tour, and achieved 82 wickets in 14 home Tests in 2017, earning ICC Cricketer and Test Player of the Year honors. By 2024, he retired with 537 Test wickets, second only to Anil Kumble for India.
